Pilots Rally Past Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - Portland scored five times over the last-two innings and defeated Washington State 10-8 in the first game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader at Bailey-Brayton Field, Tuesday.

The Pilots (18-28) trailed 6-5 before scoring twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth against the Washington State (21-25) bullpen. The Cougars came up with two runs in the ninth, but failed to get the tying run to the plate.

Washington State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Nate Blackham led off with a single and eventually scored on an error. With two outs, Taylor Ard doubled and scored on a single by Adam Nelubowich.

After Portland picked up a run in the top of the second, the Cougars answered with two runs in the home half of the inning. Collin Slaybaugh opened the frame with a triple and came home on a ground out by Stetson Olson. With two outs, Blackham singled and Cody Bartlett plated him with a double for a 4-1 lead.

Portland took a 5-4 lead with a four-run fourth and chased Washington State starter Kellen Camus. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Slaybaugh, a double by Trace Tam Sing and a ground out by Blackham. A sacrifice fly by Derek Jones put the Cougars on top 6-5 in the sixth.

Washington State capped its scoring in the ninth on an RBI-ground out by Ard and a sacrifice fly by Brett Jacobs. Brent Miller (4-2) worked three innings of shutout relief to earn the victory while Anthony Drobnick (1-2) took the loss.
