SPOKANE, Wash. - Washington State belted four home runs and used a 14-hit attack to defeat No. 24 Gonzaga 11-6 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday.
Each member of the Cougars' starting infield went deep for Washington State (12-12). After Gonzaga (16-9-1) scored a run in the first, first baseman Taylor Ard led off the second with a home run to tie the game 1-1. Third baseman Matt Argyropoulos broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run shot in the third. Two batters later, second baseman Tommy Richards hit a solo blast to give the Cougars a 6-3 advantage. The dinger by Richards was the first of his career. In the fifth, shortstop Cody Bartlett buried the Bulldogs with a three-run home run that increased Washington State's lead to 10-3.
Ard finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a sacrifice fly, and three RBI. Brett Jacobs and Jason Monda each contributed a 3-for-5 night. Two of Jacobs' hits were doubles while Monda and Nate Blackham each tripled. Blackham's hit came in his first-collegiate start.
On the mound, Adam Conley gave up a run in one inning of a controlled start. James Wise (3-3) yielded two runs in three innings of work. Kellen Camus, Anthony Drobnick, Richie Ochoa and J.D. Leckenby combined for four innings with an unearned run charged to Camus the only blemish. The Bulldogs picked up a couple of runs against Paris Shewey in the ninth to close the scoring.
The Cougars open a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series against nationally-ranked UCLA Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
