PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning and rallied to beat Gonzaga 17-11 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Seven Cougars (10-10) recorded a multi-hit game led by Cody Bartlett's 4-for-6 night. Bartlett drove in three runs and scored four times. Brett Jacobs and Taylor Ard each had three hits and four RBI.

"Offensively, we were much better tonight," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Our bullpen did a nice job for the most part, but defensively we still did not make some plays we have to make."

Gonzaga (13-8-1) raced out to a 6-1 lead after two and half innings with four runs in the first and two in the third to chase Washington State starter Bret DeRooy. The Cougars scored in the home half of the first on a double by Jay Ponciano, a wild pitch and an RBI-ground out by Jacobs.

Washington State scored four times in the third to pull within 6-5 highlighted by back-to-back RBI-singles from Ard and Matt Argyropoulos. In the fourth, the Bulldogs scored four times off reliever Sal Arena to regain a five-run advantage at 10-5. Washington State picked up a run its half of the fourth on a double by Collin Slaybaugh and a single by Bartlett.

Slaybaugh opened the sixth with a single and scored on a double by Bartlett. One out later, Jacobs singled against Andy Hunter (2-2), the third of five Gonzaga pitchers, to score Bartlett and cut the Cougars' deficit to 10-8. After Derek Jones grounded out, Ard plated Jacobs with a single. Argyropoulos singled to put runners at first and second and Jason Monda's ground ball was misplayed for an error that allowed Ard to score the tying run. Tommy Richards capped the rally with a two-run triple that gave Washington State a 12-10 lead.

Ard extended the lead to 14-10 with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh. The Cougars added three runs in the eighth with two outs on a two-run double by Ponciano and a run-scoring single by Jacobs. Gonzaga tallied a run in the ninth inning against J.D. Leckenby before Anthony Drobnick struck out Maxx Garrett on three pitches with the bases loaded to end the game.

Richie Ochoa (3-0) worked two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to earn the victory. Washington State opens a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series with Stanford beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Pullman.
