BERKELEY, Calif. - Justin Jones blanked Washington State for eight innings and No. 16 California defeated Washington State 3-0 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Evans Diamond, Saturday.

Jones (3-1) yielded seven hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter. James Wise (2-2) gave up three runs in seven innings for the Cougars (9-9, 0-2 Pac-10). Both of Wise's losses have come when Washington State has been shut out.

The Cougars threatened to get on the board in the first inning when singles by Brett Jacobs and Taylor Ard put runners at the corners with one out. However, the rally ended when Jones induced a pop out by Derek Jones and retired Matt Argyropoulos on a ground ball.

Wise set down nine of the first-11 men he faced until giving up a run in the fourth on a double and a pair of fly outs. The Golden Bears (15-5, 2-0) added two runs in the seventh on a walk, a sacrifice and back-to-back singles.

Matt Flemer set the Cougars down in order in the ninth for his third save. The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
