BERKELEY, Calif. - Erik Johnson pitched two-hit shutout ball over eight innings and No. 16 California defeated visiting Washington State 7-0 at Evans Diamond in the Pacific-10 Conference baseball opener for both schools, Friday.
Johnson (4-1) struck out six and walked four. The lone hits against him wer a single by Matt Argyropoulos leading off the fifth inning and another by Taylor Ard to open the seventh.
Adam Conley (4-2) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits in six innings. The Washington State (9-8, 0-1 Pac-10) left-hander walked one and struck out one.
California (14-5, 1-0) scored four times in the second, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth. Tony Renda had three of the Golden Bears' 12 hits.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m.
