PULLMAN, Wash. - Bret DeRooy pitched six shutout innings and Washington State collected 21 hits in a 16-2 victory over Utah Valley in nonconference baseball, Sunday.
DeRooy (1-0), a sophomore left-hander, limited the Wolverines (3-10) to four hits, struck out and did not walk a batter as Washington State (9-4) extended its winning streak to four games while completing a three-game sweep of Utah Valley.
"Bret gave us a great start today and we look for more from him as the season progresses," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Offensively, we played with some urgency for the first time this year. Hopefully, we keep our energy up moving forward."
The Cougars jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and chased Utah Valley starter Kyle Beecher (1-1). Taylor Ard singled in a run and Patrick Claussen drilled a two-run double in the first inning to give Washington State a 3-0 advantage.
In the second, Jason Monda doubled in two runs and Ard singled him home to put the Cougars on top 6-0. Matt Argyropoulos and Claussen each added an RBI-single sandwiched around a wild pitch that allowed Derek Jones to score and Washington State had its 9-0 lead.
The Cougars tacked on two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Claussen and a run-scoring single by Jay Ponciano. Collin Slaybaugh knocked in a run with a single in the fifth and Paul Clingan launched a two-run home run in the sixth to make the score 14-0.
Utah Valley picked up a run in the seventh and another in the eighth off the Cougar bullpen. Tommy Richards capped Washington State's scoring with a two-run double in the seventh.
Washington State opens a seven-game road stretch with a four-game series at Fresno State. The first meeting is scheduled for 6:05 p.m., Thursday. NewsTalk 1150 KQQQ will broadcast the game.
COUGAR NOTES
