PULLMAN, Wash. - Freshman Travis Cook pitched into the seventh inning to earn his first-collegiate victory and No. 20 Washington State downed Portland 3-2 in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Wednesday. The win was the seventh-straight for the Cougars (33-18) and came in Washington State's final regular season home game.

"It was a coming out party for Travis Cook," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We are feeding off each other and playing our best baseball of the season right now as a team."

The Cougars scored a run in the first off Portland (31-18) starter Kyle Kraus (9-3). Cody Bartlett walked with one out and Derek Jones singled. Following a double steal, Matt Fanelli drove in Bartlett with a ground out. In the third, Bartlett led off with a double, took third on a ground out by Jones and scored when Fanelli grounded out to short.

In the fourth, Brett Jacobs opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Argyropoulos. Jay Ponciano delivered an infield single and Jacobs came around to score on an error for a 3-0 Cougar lead.

Cook (1-3) went six and two-thirds innings, gave up four hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter. He yielded a solo home run in the fifth and another in the seventh before departing.

Michael Ratigan pitched an inning and two-thirds of shutout ball and Seth Harvey retired the Pilots in order in the ninth for his second save.

The Cougars close out their regular season with a three-game series at UCLA beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
