PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State tallied 11 times in the fourth inning and routed USC for the second-straight day with an 18-4 victory in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The 24th-ranked Cougars (30-18, 13-10) have scored 38 runs on 41 hits in the first two games of the series against the Trojans (25-30, 5-18 Pac-10).

"It was great to see our offense going for the second day in a row and James Wise gave us an outstanding start," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said.

After the Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the second, WSU's offense exploded in the fourth. Matt Fanelli was hit by a pitch and Derek Jones homered off the right field foul pole. Shea Vucinich walked, Patrick Claussen was hit by a pitch and Matt Argyropoulos reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.

Jay Ponciano and Garry Kuykendall followed with back-to-back singles to make the score 5-0 and chase Trojans' starter Chris Mezger (4-2). Cody Bartlett greeted reliever Logan Odom with a RBI-single and Michael Weber delivered a two-run single that increased the Cougars' advantage to 8-0. Fanelli was hit by a pitch for the second time in the inning to load the bases and Jones blasted a pitch over the wall in center field for a grand slam, his 10th home run of the season.

The outburst was more than James Wise (3-1) needed as the Cougar junior gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Seth Harvey pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.

USC scored twice in the fifth on a home run by Ricky Oropesa and WSU's Ryan Peterson recorded a RBI on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning. Oropesa's RBI-ground out in the sixth gave the Trojans their third run. In the bottom of the sixth, Bartlett singled in a run, Weber's drove home a run with a fielder's choice and Jones picked up his seventh RBI of the game with a run-scoring single to make the score 16-3.

Weber added a two-run single in the seventh for the Cougars and Garret Houts homered in the eighth for USC to close out the scoring. The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch schedule for noon.

WSU NOTES
The 14-run margin of victory was the largest in school history for Washington State against USC...Derek Jones and Michael Weber combined to go 6-for-10 with 12 RBI.
