PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State scored six times in the first inning and rolled past USC 20-7 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The No. 24 Cougars (29-18, 12-10 Pac-10) won for the sixth time in their last seven conference games. The loss was the fifth-straight in Pac-10 play for USC (25-29, 5-17 Pac-10).

"It was good to see our offense get going early," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We needed to have a game where we had that type of support for our pitching."

After Arnold (5-2) set the Trojans down in order in the top of the first, the Cougars collected a half dozen hits in the bottom of the inning off USC's Ben Mount (5-5).

With one out, Cody Bartlett doubled. Matt Fanelli walked with two outs and Mount committed a pair of balks to plate the first run of the game. An infield hit by Derek Jones brought home Fanelli and Shea Vucinich followed with a single. Jones and Vucinich pulled off a double steal and Patrick Claussen drove both runners in with a single up the middle to give WSU a 4-0 lead. After an error, Jay Ponciano singled to load the bases and Garry Kuykendall capped the rally with a two-run single.

Jones had a RBI-single in the second, Fanelli was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in third and Matt Argyropoulos drove in a run with a ground out in the fourth to give the Cougars a 9-2 advantage.

Washington State put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the fifth. Jones and Claussen each had a RBI-single and Argyropoulos doubled home two runs to increase the Cougars' lead to 13-2. Ponciano added a two-run single, an error allowed a run and Weber knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 17-2. Brett Jacobs added a two-run single to finish the scoring in the fifth and Paul Clingan's RBI-fielder's choice in the eighth accounted for WSU's final run.

The series continues, Saturday at 2 p.m.
