SEATTLE - Washington posted a 4-3 win over Washington State in the rubber game of a Pacific-10 Conference opening series, Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

With the victory, the Huskies (14-11, 2-1 Pac-10) earned a split in Saturday's doubleheader after the Cougars (15-9, 1-2 Pac-10) won game one 6-5 in 12 innings.

"We were outplayed," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "The Huskies wanted it more."

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Washington's Adam Cimber (2-1) when Brett Jacobs singled, stole second and came around to score on a single by Derek Jones. Washington tied the game in the bottom of the first on a double, sacrifice bunt and a throwing error.

In the bottom of the fifth, Washington loaded the bases with two outs against reliever Richie Ochoa (1-2) on an infield single and two walks. Caleb Brown then cleared the bases with a triple to right-center field to give the Huskies a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh on singles by Michael Weber and pinch hitter Ryan Peterson sandwiched around a hit by pitch to pinch hitter Patrick Claussen. Garry Kuykendall followed with a deep fly ball to right field that scored Weber. Washington right fielder Sean Meehan's throw to third in attempt to retire Claussen caromed off third baseman Jacob Lamb. Claussen tried to score on the play, but Lamb recovered in time to throw him out at the plate.

WSU closed within a run on back-to-back doubles by Jones and Matt Fanelli to open the eighth inning, but Fanelli was left stranded at third when pinch hitter Brady Steiger grounded out to end the frame.

Jacob Clem retired the Cougars 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to earn his first save.

The Cougars open a two-game series at BYU, Monday at 3 p.m. Mountain/2 p.m. Pacific.
