PULLMAN, Wash. - Chad Arnold and Spencer Jackson each delivered an outstanding start on the mound and Washington State swept Utah in a nonconference baseball doubleheader 5-1 and 6-2, Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

In the opener, Arnold (2-0) tossed the first complete game of his career and held Utah (5-4) to four hits. The WSU (8-0) right-hander retired 21 of 22 men he faced during one stretch and came within two outs of a shutout. In the nightcap, Jackson (2-0) gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings to earn his second win in as many starts.

"Chad Arnold and Spencer Jackson were pretty good today," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "Chad is a veteran as a junior and I think he was overshadowed a bit last year by Matt Way. Spencer has been a pleasant surprise so far this season."

Shea Vucinich led the offense in game one with a 2-for-3 day, including a double, and two RBI. Ryan Peterson collected a RBI-single and Vucinich doubled home a run in the second to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

WSU added a run in the third on a run-scoring single by Derek Jones, scored on an error in the fifth, and Vucinich picked up a RBI-single in the sixth.

The Cougars spotted the Utes a run in the first inning of game two, but tied the game 1-1 in the third on a two out, RBI-single by Matt Argyropoulos. An inning later, Garry Kuykendall plated the go-ahead run with a two-out basehit.

WSU added three runs in the fifth. Jones led off the frame with a mammoth home run over the wall in right-center field. Argyropoulos singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Michael Weber's double. Peterson followed with a RBI-single to cap the rally and give WSU a 5-1 advantage.

Freshman Brett Jacobs singled home a run in the sixth and Utah added a run in the seventh on a RBI-single by Mark Moorman to close out the scoring.

The teams continue their four-game series, Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
