LUBBOCK, Texas - Washington State scored seven times over the first-two innings and defeated Texas Tech 10-7 in the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field, Sunday.
The game was shortened to eight innings due to WSU (6-0) travel plans. With the victory, the Cougars finished the tournament 4-0 and are off to their best start since 1988 when they won their first-nine games. Texas Tech (6-2) split its four games in the tournament.
"Given the injuries and adversity we are dealing with, I am very proud of the way we played and that we were able to get four wins this weekend," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "If you are going to have injuries, as long as they are not season-ending, it is okay to have them early because you can develop some depth. We went deep into our pitching staff at this tournament and our guys responded."
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-1 lead with three runs in the first and four in the second. Matt Argyropoulos doubled home two and scored on a Michael Weber single to put WSU on top 3-0. In the second, Shea Vucinich tripled with one out and came home on a single by Cody Bartlett. With two outs, Jay Ponciano, Derek Jones and Argyropoulos delivered back-to-back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
Rusty Shellhorn started on the mound for the Cougars in his season debut and gave up two runs in four innings. He yielded up four hits, walked two and struck out a career-high six. Kendall Mayer made his collegiate debut in the fifth. Despite giving up three walks, the freshman right-hander escaped unscathed. The Red Raiders put together a four-run rally in the sixth off Michael Ratigan to pull within a run, but WSU responded with three runs in the seventh.
Ponciano and Jones walked to open the inning. After Argyropoulos moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt, Matt Fanelli singled up the middle to score two and Brett Jacobs followed with a RBI-double that increased the Cougars' lead to 10-6.
Paris Shewey (2-0) picked up his second win of the tournament by giving up one run over the final two innings. Texas Tech starter Jordan Stern (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up six runs in one and two-thirds innings.
WSU returns home Friday, March 6 to open a four-game series with Utah beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Second baseman Cody Bartlett, third baseman Matt Argyropoulos, left fielder Derek Jones, starting pitcher Spencer Jackson and relief pitcher Adam Conley were named to the all-tournament team...Jones was the tournament MVP after batting .438 (7-for-16) with a double, two home runs, three RBI and seven runs...Cougars played all 26 student-athletes who traveled to Lubbock.
