SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga collected 23 hits and defeated Washington State 17-6 in nonconference baseball, Tuesday.
The Bulldogs (24-10), ranked 22nd nationally, scored in six different innings. Reedy Berg (2-2) worked five innings for the victory while senior Jared Prince (1-4) took the loss for the Cougars (15-16).
Washington State trailed 1-0 after two innings, then used the long ball to take a 4-1 lead. Junior Michael Weber singled to open the frame, and one out later Matt Fanelli launched a home run over the 400-foot sign in center field to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead. After sophomore Shea Vucinich struck out, seniors Alex Burg and Greg Lagreid hit back-to-back homers to increase WSU's lead to 4-1.
Gonzaga answered with a five-run third to assume a 6-4 advantage and chase Prince. The big hit in the inning was a three-run home run by Mark Castellitto.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth, seventh in the fifth and run in the sixth before Fanelli drove home two runs with a single in the seventh for WSU to cut the Cougars' deficit to 16-6.
Washington State returns home to open a three-game series against Arizona at 5:30 p.m., Friday.
WSU NOTES
Junior Matt Fanelli's home run was the first of his career and his four RBI were a career high...Washington State used 24 players, including eight pitchers, both season highs.
