LAS VEGAS - Freshman Shea Vucinich was 5-for-5 with four RBI to lead Washington State past UNLV 9-5 in nonconference baseball, Wednesday night.
Freshman John Desmarais added four hits and four RBI as the Cougars swept the two-game series for their first road sweep since a three-game set at Northern Colorado, April 21-23, 2006.
"Our young guys provided the offense and once again our bullpen was outstanding," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said.
The Cougars raced out to an 8-0 lead with three runs in the second inning and five more in the third. Scott Suttmeier drove in the first run with a RBI-single. Vucinich drove in a run with a double and Desmarais singled to plate the third run of the frame.
In the third, Vucinich ripped a three-run double with two outs to increase the Cougars' lead to 6-0. After Travis Coulter walked, Desmarais knocked in a pair of runs with a double to left.
The Cougars led 9-1 entering the bottom of the fifth when the Rebels scored four runs on five hits and chased WSU starter James Wise. Andrew Davis (1-0) came in to end the threat with a strikeout and went on to log two and one-third innings of shutout relief for his first victory as a Cougar.
Seth Harvey and Steve Kost blanked UNLV in the eighth and ninth, respectively as the WSU bullpen improved to 4-0 with one save and a 1.26 earned run average this season.
Washington State returns home to host Wright State in a three-game series beginning at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
