Final Stats

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 12 Arizona State scored three runs in the fifth and made them stand up as the Sun Devils held off a late Cougar rally to defeat Washington State 4-3 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday evening at Packard Stadium.

Down two entering the top of the ninth, Greg Lagreid led off with a single to right. The next batter, Paul Gran, hit into a 6-3 double play as Lagreid was called for interference at second base. Jeff Miller followed with a solo home run to left, but WSU (16-16, 1-7) drew no closer as Jason Jarvis, who entered for ASU (28-10, 9-2) in the top of the ninth, retired the next batter to preserve the win.

WSU manufactured a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1 as with two outs and runners at the corners, Cody Bartlett took off from first a was caught in a run down. Matt Fanelli at third alertly broke for home from third and crossed before Bartlett was tagged out.

The Sun Devils put up three in the fifth, all coming with two outs, as Jarred Bogany's infield single plated the first run and Andrew Romine followed with a two-run double to center. The Cougars cut the lead to two in the sixth as Zach Borba walked, stole second, then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop Romine.

Facing the No. 2 hitting team in the nation, the Cougar pitchers kept the Sun Devil bats in check for the most part. Starter Wayne Daman Jr. worked five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Ross Humes came on to start the sixth and did not allow a run, scattering three hits while striking out three with no walks.
