PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State All-American Tyson Byers won the men's pole vault with a WSU indoor facility record, meet record and NCAA Provisional Qualifying height of 17-feet, 3/4 inch (5.20m) Saturday at the Fifth Annual WSU Indoor Open Track & Field Meet.
Byers, a fifth-year senior from Spokane Valley, Wash., became the first man to clear 17-feet in the Indoor Practice Facility where the Cougars host indoor track and field meets. He broke a WSU indoor facility record that was set 29 years ago, in 1978, by Brian Worden with his pole vault of 16-10 3/4 (5.15m) in Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
A total of five men and six women broke meet records during the two-day meet. Idaho's Russ Winger won the shot put with an NCAA Automatic Qualifying and meet record toss of 63-5 1/2 (19.34m). Vandal teammates Sam Michener and Benjamin Mimoun, running unattached, finished first and second in the 200m dash with meet record times of 22.28 seconds and 22.32 seconds, respectively. WSU's Andrew Jones won the mile in a meet record time of 4:18.72.
Cougar All-American multi-events specialist Diana Pickler leaped to a meet record winning the long jump with a distance of 19-1 1/4 (5.82m). She also reached an NCAA PQ time of 8.39 seconds as she won the 60m hurdles. WSU sophomore Sara Trané led a trio of Cougs to better the women's mile meet record. Trané's winning time was 5:04.02, with teammates Collier Lawrence (5:06.01) and Meghan Leonard (5:12.27) finishing second and third in meet record times. Cougar thrower McKenzie Garberg won the women's shot put with a meet record toss of 47-9 (14.55m).
Central Washington's Katie Hummel broke her 2006 meet record in the 3000m with her 2007 winning time of 10:15.95.
Washington State's other winners in the women's events included freshman Princess Joy Griffey (60m dash), La Shawnda Porter-Red (200m), Brandi Probasco-Canda (400m), Marisa Sandoval (800m), Julie Pickler (high jump), and Kaylee Gardner (triple jump). Former Cougar All-American pole vaulter Tamara Diles won that event with a clearance of 13-1 1/2 (4.00m).
Cougar men with winning performances included Jaycee Robertson (60m dash), Chris Concha (800m), Robert Williams (60m hurdles), freshman Trent Arrivey (high jump), freshman Kyle Schauble (long jump), and Moreno Zapata (triple jump).
The next competition for the WSU track and filed team is the Cougar Indoor scoring meet next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26 and 27, at the WSU Indoor Practice Facility on the Pullman campus. Teams from Idaho, Montana, Utah State, and UC Irvine will compete with the Cougs in the two-day meet which will include the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon.
