Diles Wins Pole Vault at Stanford Invitational Track Meet

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Tamara Diles won the women's pole vault and several of the Washington State track and field athletes came away with improved marks Saturday at the Stanford Invitational Track Meet at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Diles (Bellevue, Wash.) won the women's top section pole vault with an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 12-feet, 11 3/4 inches (3.96m) while freshman Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY) cleared an NCAA RQ height of 12-6 (3.81m) which tied for fourth place. Both women have already cleared better NCAA qualifying heights this season.

Meghan Leonard (sophomore, Newberg, Ore.) finished third in the women's 3000m steeplechase section 2 with an NCAA Regional Qualifying and personal-best time of 10 minutes, 41.04 seconds, second fastest in WSU history. Teammates Kayle Peterson and Collier Lawrence ran in the same race with Peterson (junior, Port Orchard, Wash.) finishing 10th in a PR time of 10:53.09 and Lawrence placing 14th in a time of 11:11.01.

Diana Pickler (junior, Sachse, Texas) took third place in the women's 100m hurdles final with a season-best and NCAA RQ time of 13.86 seconds.

Drew Ulrick (junior, Spokane, Wash.) and Matt Lamb (freshman, Emmett, Idaho) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the men's discus top section with NCAA RQ marks of 180-feet, 2 inches (54.93m) and 176-10 (53.89m). Both Ulrick and Lamb threw better NCAA discus marks last weekend in L.A.

In the men's high jump, Kyle Eaton (sophomore, Ellensburg, Wash.) cleared 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) for ninth place at the B pit. Robin Mikesh (senior, Sumner, Wash.), the defending Pac-10 high jump champion, reached a season-best 5-7 3/4 (1.72m) for fourth place in the women's A pit.

Cougar freshman Sara Trané (Sweden) ran a season best time of 2:12.55 in the women's 800m race.

In the men's steeplechase, Phil Hinrichs (sophomore, Pullman) ran a season-best time of 9:12.69 for eighth in section 2 and Evan Blanshan (sophomore, Selah, Wash.) finished 15th in section 3 with a time of 9:53.64.

Sarah Burns (sophomore, Tacoma, Wash.) took fourth place in the women's top section triple jump with a season-best leap of 39-1 (11.91m). Moreno Zapata (freshman, Tacoma, Wash.) took seventh place in the men's top second triple jump with leap of 47-2 1/4w (14.38m).

The only Cougar male sprinter to race Saturday, Brian Woods (junior, Buena Vista, Calif.) ran a 200m time of 22.01 for 12th in the men's top section. The women's 4x400m relay ran a time of 3:54.48 for 11th in their race.

In events contests Friday evening, McKenzie Garberg (sophomore, Benton City, Wash.) reached third place in the women's discus section B with a toss of 148-9 (45.33m).

A trio of Cougar men ran in the 5000m sections with senior Danny Wolf (Reno, Nev.) reaching the best time of 14:14.91, followed by Andrew Jones (junior, Gillette, Wyo.) in a time of 14:28.16, and Drew Polley (redshirt freshman, Port Orchard, Wash.) with a time of 14:54.15.

Several WSU athletes competed at the Whitworth Invitational Track & Field Meet in Spokane Saturday as unattached. Cougar winners at Boppell Track included Selena Galaviz in the 800m (2:25.00), Josh Leyk in the 110m hurdles (15.18), Ryan Thomas in the high jump (6-6 3/4), and Cameron Schwisow in the javelin with a PR of 200-11.

A select group of Cougars will compete next week at the Texas Relays April 5 through April 8 at Austin, Texas.
