Cougars Down UCLA 10-7 for First Conference Win

Pullman, Wash. - Washington State first baseman Nick Hall went 3-for-3 and right fielder Garrett Kimbrel went 3-for-4 combining for four RBI to lead the Cougars past UCLA 10-7 notching WSU's first Pac-10 Conference win Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Sophomore Wayne Daman Jr. (7-5) started the game for the Cougars (21-33, 1-19 Pac-10) earning the win, allowing four runs on nine hits, while fanning three over 5.2 innings. Co-captain Dane Renkert earned his fifth save of the season throwing 3.1 innings while giving up six hits and three runs.

UCLA (14-37, 3-17) sent five pitchers to the mound, including three in the seventh inning, with starting pitcher Bryan Beck (1-10) taking the loss. Beck pitched five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits.

WSU used a three-run fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead it would never relinquish. Brady Everett opened the inning with a single, advanced on a walk, moved to third on a grounder and scored on a Hall single. Kimbrel singled, advancing Hall to second and both runners scored on shortstop Scott Suttmeier's double to left-center.

The Cougs added two more in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Kaeo Rubin and an RBI-single by Hall.

UCLA cut WSU's lead 7-4 in the sixth, but the Cougars put the game away with a three-run seventh inning.

With one out, Jay Miller reached base on a two-base fielding error by Bruins' shortstop Nolan Rouse. Miller advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Everett single. Zach McAngus doubled to score Everett and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kimbrel recorded his second RBI of the game singling up the middle to score McAngus and increased WSU's lead to 10-4.

UCLA rallied in the eighth scoring three runs on four hits. Chris Denove opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Rouse single. The runners advanced on a ground out to the pitcher and Denove scored on a grounder to third. Chris Jensen notched the final tallies of the game on a two-run shot to over the right field wall,

WSU broke into the scoring column first with one run in the opening inning. Second baseman Jeff Miller singled to right, stole second and scored on an UCLA fielding error.

UCLA took the lead in the top the second with two hits and two walks. Sean Carpenter singled to right and Daman Jr. loaded the bases, walking Matt Sharp and Denove. Centerfielder Josh Roenicke hit a two-run single, scoring Sharp and Denove to put UCLA on the board. Roenicke finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI.

The Cougars knotted the score 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a Hall single and an RBI-double by Kimbrel.

UCLA broke up the tie in the top of the fourth as Roenicke picked up his third RBI of the game on a single to score Denove. Denove reached on a single and was sacrificed to second.

The three-game Pac-10 series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled at noon.
