SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
Washington State catcher Brady Everett hit a grand slam home run in the third inning Sunday, staking the Cougars to a 5-4 lead, but Sacramento State battled back with three runs in the fourth to win 8-6 and capture the series 2-1.
Cougar starting pitcher Reese Baker (0-1) allowed seven runs, four earned, in 3.2 innings of work and suffered the loss. Matt Oye allowed three hits and one earned run in 2.1 innings on the mound, while Jayson Miller finished up on the mound for WSU, working two innings and allowing one hit.
Sacramento State's (2-1) Warren Rosebrock (1-0) pitched the final 5.1 innings to gain the win, allowing just five hits and no runs while striking out three Cougars.
"We played poorly this weekend," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We played as poorly as you possibly can all weekend long. We didn't play great defense and we didn't hit or pitch well either. We are going to have to come back this week and work hard in practice to fix some of the errors we had to prepare for next weekend. Jayson Miller pitched very well and will start next weekend for us."
The Hornets took an early four-run lead with five hits and a sacrifice bunt in the first. Pedro Santiago singled to score Everett Rincon, who reached base on an error three batters earlier. Matt Wilson then plated Brian Blauser with a bunt and Pat Keiper followed with a bases loaded single to short, scoring Santiago and Wilson with two unearned runs.
In the third WSU's Jeff Miller led off the inning with a walk, Thomas singled and Kaeo Rubin walked to load the bases. After Jason Freeman struck out, Jay Miller walked to force home WSU's first run. That set the stage for Everett's second home run of the series, a bases loaded blast over the center field wall.
The Hornets battled back to tied the game 5-5 in their half of the third inning when Josh Levine doubled home Santiago, who opened the inning with a single.
WSU regained the lead 6-5 by scoring its final run in the fourth inning when Jay Miller singled home Jason Freeman, who walked and stole second.
Sacramento State's Travis Kassebaum scored the first of the Hornets' three runs in the fourth. He led off the inning with a walk and advancing to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Jim Strombach's single then scored Kassebaum to even the score 6-6. Strombach then stole second and scored the go ahead run when Wilson singled to center field. Brian Conradi drove home Santiago two batters later with a single for the final run of the game.
The Cougars will travel to Hammond, La., next weekend to take on Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series beginning Friday at 4:30 p.m.
