The Washington State baseball team took the series against Southeastern Louisiana 2-1, with a 14-7 win in the first game Saturday's doubleheader before losing 13-5 in the second game at Alumni Field.
In the first game Dustin Willis (1-0) earned the win for WSU by throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball after entering the game in the fifth inning for starter Jason Miller. Reese Baker (0-2) recorded the loss for Washington State (3-3) in the series finale, allowing six runs, three earned, and six hits in the first two innings.
Southeastern Louisiana (1-2) starting pitcher Rodney Story (0-1) recorded the loss in the morning game after allowing seven runs, three earned, and eight hits over 4.1 innings. Starter Chad Catalano (1-0) earned the win for the Lions in the third game of the series, despite surrendering five runs, all earned, four walks and seven hits in five innings.
In the opener Southeastern Louisiana took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with two-run home run by Jon Greenwich and a fielding error that allowed Gary Duhe to score. The Lions added two runs in the third, thanks to a Cougar fielding error and a run-scoring double by Trent Hebert. Duhe also scored the final two runs for Southeastern Lousisiana with single tallies in the fifth and ninth innings.
The Cougars scored a single run in the second inning, four runs in both the third and the eighth frams, two in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Zach McAngus, who was 5-5 and drove home three runs in the first game, scored WSU's first run after leading off the second with a double. He then scored on a throwing error by the Lions.
After a single, an error and two stolen bases in the third inning, Brady Everett singled to score Jay Miller. McAngus then singled up the middle and advanced to third on a Lion error that allowed Jayson Miller and Everett to score. Jeff Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to plate McAngus.
WSU used three hits to score twice in the fifth inning, then added three runs in the sixth inning with three hits and an error to take a 10-6 lead. Everett doubled and scored in each inning, with McAngus sending him home with a single in each inning. McAngus also scored in the fifth, with Kaeo Rubina and Jason Freeman also scoring in the sixth inning.
The Cougars added their final four runs in the eighth inning. Jeff Miller hit a two-run single and then scored when Matt Thomas homered to left to take a 14-6 lead.
In the second game of the day, Southeastern Louisiana took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back, scoring 13 runs with 15 hits for the 13-5 win in the series finale. The Lions scored a pair of runs in both the third and sixth innings, three in the fourth and scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Washington State scored three runs in the third and two runs in the fourth inning with seven hits, but committed four errors including two in the first inning that allowed three unearned runs.
WSU's Zach Kosturos hit a two-run double and then scored on an error by the Lions's centerfielder in the third to cut the Lions' lead to 4-3. Southeastern Louisiana's Territo then hit a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to widen the scoring gap.
In the fourth Scott Suttmeier hit a sacrifice fly to score Thomas, while Jay Miller drove home the Cougars' final run of the game with a single that scored Rubin.
The hosts counted with three runs in their half of the fourth inning, taking advantage of three walks. The Lions also added runs in each of the final three innings of the game. Duhe drove home a pair of runs in the sixth with a single and Hebert plated Roth in the seventh. Clevenger hit a solo home run for the final run of the game.
