Final Stats

Washington State baseball's Brandon Hundt earned the save Friday, keeping the No. 29 Birmingham-Southern Panthers in check for 3.2 innings in front of 716 fans at Bailey-Brayton Field as WSU took the win, 8-6.

Hundt allowed two runs, one earned and two hits while striking out two of 15 batters he faced in the Cougars (17-8) victory. Aaron MacKenzie (4-2) earned the win after pitching 5.1 innings of work, allowing four runs, all earned, and five hits while striking out four.

"Hundt was the key to the game," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "The game could have easily changed in that inning (sixth inning) and he was the key. I am very happy with his performance."

David Horne (4-1) took the loss for the Panthers (19-7), allowing seven hits and seven runs, three earned, in 5.1 innings of work.

WSU took the lead in the first and never looked back. Kaeo Rubin walked to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on a Jason Freeman sacrifice bunt. He then advanced to third on a Jay Miller single and was brought home when Jeremy Farrar hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Cougs took a 5-0 lead after the second inning with four unearned runs. Collin Henderson reached base and advanced to second on an error by BSC's left fielder. J.J. Burress was hit by a pitch and then driven home when Freeman hit a two-run double to left-center. Jay Miller singled to left-center to score Freeman and was brought home by Farrar's single to left.

Rubin extended his hitting streak to nine games when he hit a RBI double in the sixth to score Brandon Reddinger, who led off the inning with an infield single. Two batters later, Rubin scored on Miller's single to left center. Farrar drove a single down the left field line, bringing home Miller for the Cougars fifth run.

The Panthers were held scoreless until the fifth when Michael Cline singled to right field to drive home Jonathan Sanford, who singled two batters earlier.

Birmingham-Southern brought the score to within one after scoring three runs in the top of the sixth. Sanford drove home Mac Godwin with a single through the left side that also advanced Barber. Wydner singled to right to drive home Barber. The next at-bat, Matt Bogue doubled down the left field line, scoring Sanford to bring the score to 5-4.

BSC scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to bring the score to 8-5 when Sanford, who led off the inning with a single, scored on a fielder's choice. Adam Tucker hit a solo home run in the ninth to end the Panthers scoring at six. Tucker's bomb was his first hit of the season.

The Cougars will continue play against the Panthers tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field in the second game of the three-game series. Bryce Chamberlin (5-0) is expected to get the nod for Saturday's game.
