Final Stats
Washington State baseball's Grant Richardson led the Cougars with two home runs, including a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to start the seven-run rally that gave the Cougars a 13-11 victory over Gonzaga, Tuesday at Avista Stadium.
Kaeo Rubin hit a game-winning double that cleared the bases, bringing home Zach McAngus, who reached base on a RBI double, Justin Hart and Greg Keim.
James Freeman (1-0) earned the win for WSU (16-8) by coming in during the eighth inning, facing two batters and not allowing any hits or runs. Aaron MacKenzie (3-2) earned his first save of the season, striking out three-of-five batters in the ninth inning.
Chris Albrecht (1-1) took the loss for the Zags (9-17), pitching two outs in the ninth, allowing one hit, Rubin's game-winning double.
Richardson scored WSU's first run with a solo home run to lead off the second inning. The Cougs didn't score again till the fifth inning when Rubin hit a single up the middle to score Zach Franklin. Franklin had walked to lead off the inning and was advanced to third on a single by Jason Freeman. Henderson then doubled down the left field line to score Freeman. Jeremy Farrar capped off WSU's scoring in the fifth when he singled to right field, hitting home Rubin and Jay Miller, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars brought the score to 11-6 in the eighth when Freeman singled to left, driving home Franklin who reached on a double.
Gonzaga took an early lead in the first inning when David Johnson hit a two-run single to score Jeff Culpepper and Chris Sinner.
The Bulldogs broke the game open with five runs in their half of the second with the efforts of Kiel Thibault who hit a two-run single to drive in Sinner and Marshall Bratton. Bobby Carlson started off the inning with a single and scored on a bases loaded walk to Bratton. Mike Rundle singled and scored on the balk that followed a hit by pitch and Bratton's walk. Thinbault scored the last run of the inning on a single by Culpepper.
Gonzaga took a 11-5 lead in the seventh when David Johnson hit a two-run double down the left field, driving home Thibault, who reached with a single and Culpepper who was hit by a pitch. Johnson scored the final Bulldog run after advancing to third on a single by Matt Reding and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Carlson.
WSU resumes play Friday at 1:00 p.m., facing Birmingham-Southern in a three game series at Bailey-Brayton Field.
