WSU Takes First Pac-10 Win With Victory Over Arizona

With the help of five RBI by Zach McAngus, including three in the first inning, Washington State took the second of a three game series over Arizona 10-4 at Kindall Field. The Cougars are now 1-1 in conference play and 7-0 with Bryce Chamberlin starting on the mound.

Bryce Chamberlin (5-0) earned the win for the Cougars (15-7) working six innings while allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned. Chamberlin struck out eight batters and walked two. Garrett Alwert (1) captured his first save of the season for WSU, pitching three scoreless innings, allowing four hits.

"Bryce Chamberlin gave us a great start," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "He was very effective for us. The key to the game was getting their starter out of the game early. McAngus came up with a big hit for us in the first inning."

Taking the loss for the Wildcats (12-11-1) was starting pitcher Luis Cortez (2-3). Cortez pitched 0.2 innings, surrendering four earned runs on one hit and four walks.

The Cougars took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning following walks to Jason Freeman, Jay Miller and Zach Kosturos to load the bases. Jeremy Farrar drew a walk to bring home Freeman. McAngus doubled to left field to score the remaining three runners.

Brandon Reddinger, who singled to start to off the fourth, reached third as a result of two passed balls. He scored on a ground out double play.

WSU added two more runs in the sixth when Reddinger singled up the left side to lead off the inning. Kaeo Rubin reached base when he was hit by a pitch. The next at-bat Freeman singled to load the bases. Miller singled to center field to bring home Reddinger and Rubin to bring the score to 7-1.

The next inning, McAngus hit a two-run home run to score Farrar, who singled to lead off the inning. The next batter was Reddinger who reached base on his third single of the day. Freeman doubled to left center to score Reddinger to end the Cougar scoring rally at 10.

Arizona posted its first run of the game in the third inning when John Hardy drew a walk to lead off the inning. He then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Hardy scored on a RBI ground out by Bill Rhinehart.

The second run for the Wildcats came in the sixth inning when Rhinehart reached first on a bunt. Rhinehart reached third on a double by Jordan Brown, and scored on a balk.

Nick Hundley led of the seventh inning with an infield single. The next batter, Derek Decater, tripled up the right field line to score Hundley. Decater scored the final run of the game on a double by John Hardy.

The Cougars and Wildcats will face off on Sunday in the rubber game of the three game series at Kindall Field. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
