Final Stats

EDINBURG, Texas - Dane Renkert earned the win for the Washington State baseball team over Texas Pan-American 15-6 to take the three-game series at Edinburg Stadium Sunday.

"I think our bullpen was the strength of our pitching today," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. "We had to go to the bullpen early which was something we haven't really had to do before and Dane Renkert came up big for us in the middle relief spot and won the game.".

Renkert (1-0) replaced starting pitcher Bryce Chamberlin (2-0) in the fourth to pitch three innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three. Freshman Wayne Daman Jr. finished the game for WSU (7-3) pitching two scoreless innings. Relief pitcher Aaron Guerra (0-3) took the loss for the Broncs (7-10), allowing five hits, and four runs, all earned, in one inning of pitching. Guerra replaced Tommy Sorden who recorded six runs, five earned in 3.2 innings.

Senior co-captain Collin Henderson led the Cougs with four RBI, giving him 11 in the final two games of the series. Grant Richardson led WSU with three hits, including an RBI double in the first inning.

"Collin had some big hits for us that helped to break things open," Mooney said. "We were pretty consistent with our hitting up and down the line."

Kaeo Rubin started off the game with a triple and then scored when Henderson took the out at first. Jay Miller was hit-by-a-pitch, then Richardson hit a double to score Jay Miller. Richardson advanced to third on an error by shortstop Aaron Flowers. Jeremy Farrar singled through the left side to score Richardson.

Farrar walked to reach base in the third inning, and then stole second following outs by Jay Miller and Richardson. Greg Keim tripled to left center to score Farrar. Keim was left stranded on third following an out by Brandon Reddinger.

Jeff Miller walked to start off the fourth inning for WSU and then advanced to second following Rubin who drew a walk. Henderson flied out to center field to advance Jeff Miller. Jay Miller doubled to left center and advanced to third on a throw to score his younger brother, Jeff and Rubin. The Cougars left the bases loaded following two batters being hit by pitches and a fielder's choice by Keim.

The Cougs added four more runs after taking two outs in the fifth inning. Justin McClure singled up the middle, and then advanced a base when Rubin hit a single up the left side. Henderson scored McClure and Rubin with a double to left-center. Henderson advance to third on a infield single by Jay Miller who then advanced to second on the same play. Richardson drove home Henderson and Miller with a single to right center. Richardson advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded when Jeremy Farrar struck out.

WSU added four runs in the sixth inning for a total of 14, when Zach McAngus led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second when Reddinger was hit-by-a-pitch. Jeff Miller reached base on a fielder's choice that advanced McAngus to second and found Reddinger out at second. McClure then took base with another fielder's choice that advanced Jeff Miller to second and scored McAngus. Henderson hit a double to score Jeff Miller and advance McClure to third. In the same play an error by left fielder T.J. Gilmer advanced Henderson to third and scored McClure. Jay Miller reached base on an error by the shortstop that scored Henderson.

Reddinger started off the eighth inning with a triple, and then scored the final run for the Cougs after McClure grounded out for the RBI.

Texas Pan-American scored two runs in the first with a single by Gilmer who stole second and then scored after Tony Ortiz hit a triple. Ortiz scored on the next play when Marco Garza hit a single. The Broncs added three more runs in the third with a solo homerun by Louie Alamia to start off the inning. Gilmer singled and advanced to second when Grimet singled through the right-side. Garza doubled to score the final two runs of the inning.

Alamia hit a sacrifice fly to left-field in the fourth inning to score Aaron Flowers for the Broncs final run of the game. Flowers reached base on a single and advanced to third on an error by Keim at third base, before scoring.

WSU will take on Portland Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m. at Lewis-Clark State for its' opening game of the Banana Belt Tournament held in Lewiston, Idaho.
