Collin Henderson Drives Home Seven of Fifteen Runs In WSU Win

EDINBURG, Texas - Senior Collin Henderson went three-for-five, driving in seven runs as the Washington State baseball team beat Texas-Pan American 15-3, Saturday at Edinburg Stadium, tieing the three-game series at 1-1.

"I think our win today is a sign of a good program because we had a tough loss on Friday," Co-captain Henderson said. "To come back and play hard and get a solid victory on Saturday shows what a strong team we are."

Senior Aaron Trolia (2-0) started the game for the Cougs (6-3) pitching six innings while allowing two runs, both earned and striking out five. Brett Sommer and Garret Alwert (0-1) both also saw mound time for WSU. Cesar Pena (1-1), the starting pitcher for the Broncs (7-9), took the loss in 1.2 innings after allowing four hits and four runs, one earned.

"I can't say enough about our starting pitching," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said. "Our pitching has been the most consistent part of our game and I am thrilled with Trolia's performance."

The Cougars had a total of 15 hits in the game. Jay Miller led the team with five singles. Also getting hits for the Cougs were Henderson, Grant Richardson, Zach Franklin, Greg Keim, Justin McClure and Jeff Miller. WSU scored one run in the first, three runs in both the second and the third, six runs in the seventh and two runs in the ninth.

Henderson, a Puyallup native, scored the first run of the game in the first inning with an infield single. Following a single by Jay Miller, Henderson scored from second on a single by Richardson. Miller was caught stealing home to end the inning.

"Henderson had a great day," Mooney said. "When we needed to break the game open, he did with a big hit in the second and with his home run in the seventh."

The Cougars sent nine batters to the plate in the second inning, managing to score three unearned runs. Jeremy Farrar started off the inning by reaching first on a walk. The next batter, Jason Freeman reached on an error, advancing Farrar to third. The Cougs then loaded the bases following a walk to Keim. McClure reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing all runners, scoring Farrar. One batter later, Henderson hit a sacrifice fly to score Freeman. Jay Miller then singled up the right side and advanced to second on the throw. The single advanced McClure to third and scored Keim. The Cougars left three men on base when Jay Miller was out at third on an unassisted play.

After two outs in the third, WSU added three more runs to their total. Keim drew a walk for the first base runner of the inning. Keim advanced to second on a single by McClure. The next batter, Kaeo Rubin was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases for the Cougs. Henderson then doubled to score all three base runners.

Henderson hit a three-run home run in the seventh to bring home McClure and Rubin. McClure reached base on a walk following Keim's triple to start off the inning. Rubin reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in Keim being thrown out at home. Jay Miller singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on when Richardson flied out to right field. Franklin and Farrar walked to load the bases. The next batter, Freeman drew a walk to score Jay Miller. Keim singled to bring home Franklin and Farrar. Keim was out at second on a fielder's choice to end the six-run inning.

In the ninth, the Cougars added two more runs. The first run came after a sacrifice fly by Zach McAngus to score Franklin, who was hit-by-a-pitch and advanced to third on a single by Farrar. J.J Burress reached base on a fielder's choice that found Farrar out at second. Freshman Jeff Miller then tripled to score Burress. Kosturos fouled out to end the inning.

The Cougs held Texas-Pan American to three runs. The first run came in the first inning when Louie Alamia walked to start off the inning. Marco Garza the singled down the right field line to score Alamia. In the third, Alamia scored the second run for the Broncs, following singles by Alamia, Saenz and Grimet. The Broncs scored their final run of the game in the ninth on a solo home run by Mark Rodriguez.

The Cougars will try to take the series tomorrow with Bryce Chamberlin (2-0) slated to start the 10 a.m. game at Edinburg Stadium.
