Final Stats

Junior Kaeo Rubin collected two hits Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell short against Pacific, 5-4, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium in their final game of the Oakland A's College Classic.

Freshman Wayne Daman, Jr. (0-1), made his collegiate debut for the Cougars (2-2) on the mound. In the losing effort, Daman threw 5.1 innings, striking out four while allowing four hits and four runs, three of which were earned. Garrett Alwert, Brett Sommer and James Freeman also pitched for the Cougars.

"Wayne Daman did an outstanding job," WSU Head Coach Tim Mooney said. "He had a very good start and got us deep into the game. It was a pitchers game. Pena pitched well for the Tigers."

Pacific starter, Matthew Pena (1-0) took the win, pitching seven innings allowing seven hits and striking out nine. Josh Schmidt shut out the Cougars in the final two innings, only allowing one hit, to earn the save for the Tigers.

In the sixth inning, Rubin hit a triple to bring in Brandon Reddinger, who had doubled, for WSU's first run of the game. One batter later, Jay Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Rubin, who also scored a run for the Cougars in the eighth.

In the seventh, Brandon Reddinger singled through the left side to score Zach McAngus who led the inning off with a double.

WSU had a chance to take the lead in the ninth, but fell short, leaving two on base to end the game.

Joining Rubin with a multiple-hit performance was Brandon Reddinger, who has had multiple-hits in three games this season. Ja, Miller, Zach McAngus, Collin Henderson and Zach Kosturos also had hits for the Cougars.

The Cougars kept the Tigers scoreless until the fifth inning, when an error advanced Jordan Seiber to third. Seiber had singled to start off the inning. The next batter, Matt Kavanaugh singled up the middle to score Seiber for the first run of the game. The remainder of Pacific's runs occurred in the sixth inning, when the Tigers hit a sacrifice fly, a double and three singles to score four runs.

"They capitalized on our error in the fifth inning," Mooney added. "They capitalized, we didn't and that was the ball game."

The Cougars next game is Friday, February 20, at 10:00 a.m. against Santa Clara in the first game of the River City Tournament in Sacramento, Calif.
