Seattle, Wash.-- Washington State sophomore Orsolya Sallai was the lone victor for the No. 33 Cougars at Sunday's Pacific-10 Championships played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Sallai, from Budapest, Hungary, won two matches in Consolation Flight No. 2 before falling in the final match. Sallai defeated USC's Anita Loyola 7-6, 6-1(6) in the quarterfinals. In a semifinal match, Sallai edged Oregon's Davina Mendiburu 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In the consolation final, Sallai lost to Stanford's Story Tweedie-Yates 6-3, 6-2.
"This is the best tournament in the country to get our players back on track after the holidays," said WSU Tennis Coach Cari Groce.
The Cougars are anchored by junior Lorena Arias, ranked No. 77 by the ITA. Arias joins with doubles teammate Chris Martinez to form the No. 45 doubles team in the nation.
The Cougars next competition will be against the No. 38 Crimson Tide of Alabama January 31 in Tuscaloosa.
