Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State Sun Devils recorded 22 hits as they defeated Washington State 14-4 in a Pac-10 baseball contest Saturday afternoon at Packard Stadium. Six ASU hitters recorded three or more hits, led by Jeremy West who collected four, as the Sun Devils improved to 24-13-1 while the Cougars dropped to 13-24, 5-7 in conference play.

After ASU jumped on top of the Cougs by scoring three runs in the first inning, WSU scored twice in the third inning on RBI-singles by first baseman Stefan Bailie and shortstop Bookie Gates.

After that, it was all Arizona State as the Sun Devils scored three runs off WSU starter Jamin Svendsen in their half of the third inning, and sent three more runners across the plate against reliever Tony Banaszak in the fifth inning. They also chalked up another run in the fifth off Tyson Thompson to build a commanding 10-3 lead after five innings, and added to the lead in the seventh and eighth innings by scoring four more runs to put the game out of hand at 14-3.

The Cougar offense, after facing two pitchers through the first three-plus innings, struggled against reliever Aaron Klusman. After Jon Baeder walked with the bases loaded to score Brent Robertson in the fourth inning, Klusman struck out the side to end the scoring threat.

After the fourth, Mike Knight, was the only Cougar to reach base until one out remained for WSU in the game. Knight was the Cougars' offensive bright spot, going 3-for-4 and stealing two bases in the contest.

The Cougar scored the game's final run in the top of the ninth inning as Richard Hall doubled off the wall in left center and came around to score on an Evan Hecker single.

The next game for WSU will be Monday, April 16, as the team will step out of conference play to take on Central Washington. The first pitch at Bailey-Brayton Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
