SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Santa Barbara relief pitcher Jim Bullard threw 4.1 shutout innings and allowed only three hits to preserve a 7-4 Gaucho win over the Washington State Cougar baseball team Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

With the win UCSB evened its season record at 10-10. WSU dropped to 8-13 and have lost three of their last four games.

The Cougars looked good out of the gates, jumping to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning. Steve Curran knocked in Jordan Nilsen with a two-out single to put the Cougs on the board. A fielding error by USCB left fielder Mike Kolbach extended the inning to score Curran and Wes Falkenborg plated Ray Hattenburg with a single up the middle to give WSU the early 3-0 lead. Second baseman David Perreira extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo home run in the top of the second.

The Gauchos pulled to within one run by scoring two in the third inning. RBI doubles by Jeff Carter and Kolbach helped bring UCSB back in the game. In the fourth, the Gauchos pulled ahead with three runs off two doubles. Chad Peshke scored two with a double to right field to give UCSB the 6-4 lead. The Gauchos added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth bring the game to the final score of 7-4.

Bullard was masterful down the stretch, allowing only three hits in his 4.1 innings of work. The freshman left-hander earned the save and Jamie Gonzalez picked up the win, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.

WSU starter Donny Davis allowed five runs in 3.2 innings and was saddled with the loss to fall to 1-1 in 2000. Reliever Lanakila Niles was solid out of the bullpen, allowing only three hits and one unearned run in his four-inning outing.

The Cougars out-hit the Gauchos 10-9, but WSU was its own worst enemy by stranding 13 men on base, eight of which were in scoring position. Hattenburg turned in his sixth multiple-hit game of the year with a 2-for-5 game. Perreira finished the afternoon 2-for-5 as well and is 4-for-7 on the Cougs spring break roadtrip.

The Cougs will look to get back in the win column Friday when they start a three-game, non-conference series with Cal State Northridge. The series will run Friday through Sunday at Matador Field in Northridge, Calif. WSU ace Todd Meldahl will take to the hill Friday for the Cougs.
