CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State relief pitcher Mark Newell stuck out nine and allowed only two runs in 6.1 innings to pick up the win as the Beavers demolished the Washington State Cougars 14-2 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Coleman Field at Goss Stadium. The win came at the heals of an 8-3 Beaver win earlier in the day that was the completion of Friday's rain-suspended game.
The win was the seventh straight for the Beavers and improved their season record to 10-6 overall and 9-1 over the last 10 games. WSU dropped its second consecutive game after enduring a mini two-game winning streak to fall to 7-12.
Left-hander Scott Nicholson continued on the mound to start for the Beavers after winning the continuation of Friday's game. Nicholson allowed only one hit in two innings to finish his day with a win and allowed only two runs in a combined eight innings pitched. Newell was effective out of the bullpen, picking up the win to improve his record to 2-1 for the year. Newell, who was an all-Pac-10 North performer in 1997, struck out nine while allowing eight hits and two runs in 6.1 innings.
WSU starter Tyson Thompson fell at the hands of some hard luck, pitching through rainy conditions to allow seven unearned runs. Thompson did walk a career-high nine in his four-inning outing, but did not allow an earned run. Donny Davis, Garrett Alwert, Nick Kenyon and Les McTavish all saw duty out of the bullpen. Alwert threw a scoreless inning of relief in his second career appearance and McTavish, who moved into fifth place in the WSU record books with 62 career appearances, also did not allow a run.
The Beavers jumped out to an early lead after two innings by scoring six unearned runs as Thompson labored through a 41-pitch second inning. After a leadoff single by Brian Barden, Thompson appeared to be out of the inning getting two quick outs. A costly error by first baseman Steve Curran loaded the bases, and then three consecutive walks gave the Beavers a 3-0 lead. Andy Jarvis doubled to left field to plate three more runs to add to the six-run OSU rally.
After OSU added a run in the fourth, the Beavers extended their lead to 9-0 with two tallies in the sixth. Right fielder Josh Carter scored two with a double to the gap in right-center field. To add insult to injury, the Beavers scored five more runs in the eighth inning to extend OSU's lead to 14-0.
WSU finally got to Newell in the ninth, rattling off four consecutive hits to post two runs on the board. Curran sparked the rally with a single off the wall in right field, and after a single by David Perreira, Zach Bode scored Curran for the Cougs first run. Mike Knight also plated a run with his third double of the year.
Curran paced the Cougars at the plate with a 2-for-4 game to extend his current hitting streak to five games. Knight was also 2-for-4 to increase his season batting average to .302.
Several Beaver players had banner days at the plate, with shortstop Will Hudson's 2-for-4 game and two doubles leading the way. Joe Gerber was also 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Carter and Jarvis each had three RBI. The Beavers out-hit the Cougs 13-9 and have tabbed at least 10 hits in each of the last 10 games.
The Cougars and Beavers will play the final game of the non-conference series Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Reggie Rivard (0-2, 7.85) is expected to start on the mound for the Cougs.
