-- The host Washington State Cougars were too generous
Thursday night at Beasley Coliseum. After winning the first two games, WSU
dropped the last three, giving the 19th-ranked Southern California Trojans
a 3-2 win. Game scores were 9-15, 12-15, 17-15, 15-6, 15-11.
WSU moves to 7-5 overall, 2-3 in conference play while USC is now 7-3
overall, 2-1 in Pac-10 contests.
The Cougars had five players in double-figure kills led by freshman LaToya
Harris' 22. Joy Sperry had 18 kills and match-high 21 digs. USC's
Antoinette Polk had a match-high 30 kills and was one of three Trojans to
have 16 digs. Jennifer Pahl contributed 15 blocks for USC. WSU setter
Melissa Wright was only three away from the school match record of 85 assists.
WSU scored the final seven points of the first game to win 15-9. Game two
saw the Cougs again in the lead with USC tying it up at ten before WSU took
back the offensive control and won 15-12.
Game three saw spurts of points with the Cougars serving for game and match
at 14-13 before kills by USC's Janae Henry and Jennifer Pahl tied it up at
14. Sperry, Missy Blackshire and Kristen Johnson kept the Cougars alive
with Johnson's kill putting WSU in the lead again at 15-14. Pahl and Henry
prevailed at the net as Sperry and Johnson committed hitting errors and USC
claimed the third game 17-15.
The youthful Cougars had the wind taken out of their sails and USC marched
though game four for the 15-6 win. Washington State made a valiant effort
in the fifth game but the momentum had shifted to the Trojans and the
visitors took the final game 15-11 and the match 3-2.
USC out-blocked the Cougars 24 to 10.
The Cougars host #10 UCLA Friday night in a FOX Sports Net telecast from
Beasley Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcast live in Los
Angeles but will be joined in progress around the nation after the
conclusion of the Cubs-Cardinals 5 p.m. baseball game. UCLA defeated
Washington Thursday night in Seattle, 15-3, 15-7, 15-5.
