PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University volleyball team won its
four consecutive match in a two-week, four match home stand when the
Cougars swept Oregon State 15-9, 15-8, 15-13 before a crowd of 899 Saturday
night at Beasley Coliseum.
WSU moves to 11-8 overall, 5-6 in conference play while Oregon State drops
to 8-11 overall, 2-9 in Pac-10 contests.
Cougar freshman Chelsie Schafer, in her first appearance as a starter, led
all hitters with 11 kills while Joy Sperry was the sole player in
double-figure digs with 13. Melissa Wright had 32 assists while Kristen
Johnson and Holly Harris each had three blocks.
Angie Shirley led the Beavers with nine kills, Sanna Jensen had eight digs
and Michele Solomon added eight blocks. Oregon State was playing without
the services of junior setter Brandi Bonnarens who dislocated her knee
Friday night in the Beavers' 3-1 loss at Washington. OSU out-blocked WSU
11 to 6 but both teams were unspectacular offensively with WSU hitting .139
and Oregon State a mere .063.
Washington State ran an 8-1 lead to a 15-9 first-game win as the Beavers
hit only .158 while adapting to freshman setter Megan Mosness.
The Cougars dominated the second game for the WSU 15-8 win.
WSU overcame a 5-0 Oregon State lead in the third, taking a 7-6 lead on
Wright's setter dink. OSU capitalized on the Cougar mistakes at the net
and scored seven straight points to go ahead 13-10. A kill by Adrian
Hankoff and a called lift by the Beavers put WSU back in the hunt at 12-13.
A Johnson and Harris block tied it at 13, followed by Johnson's deep kill
to put WSU at game point. OSU's Sara Bjeldanes attack error gave WSU the
game and match-winning point.
"Chelsie played a really nice game tonight," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick
said. "She deserved the starting spot. She's been getting the kills and
putting the numbers up."
Schafer hit .556 in WSU's 3-0 sweep of Oregon and tagged a .375 hitting
percentage against OSU.
WSU travels to Los Angeles to meet #6 UCLA, Friday, Oct. 29, at Pauley
Pavilion, and #17 USC Saturday, Oct. 30, at North Gym.
