PULLMAN, Wash.
-- Washington State University swept Oregon 15-4, 15-0,
15-7, to send the Ducks to their 13th straight loss Friday night at Beasley
Coliseum. It was also the Cougars' 18th consecutive win against the Ducks,
dating back to 1990.
WSU, winners of three straight, moves to 10-8 overall, 4-6 in conference
play, while Oregon drops to 6-13 overall, 0-10 in Pac-10 contests.
Four Cougars hit better than .500 on the night, including Kristin Johnson
(Olympia, Wash,) at .714, Trina Kightlinger (Yorba Linda, Calif.) at .625,
Chelsie Schafer (Saskatoon, Sask.) at .556 and setter Melissa Wright
(Muncie, Ind.) at .625.
LaToya Harris (Portland, Ore.) led WSU with 12 kills, while Joy Sperry
(Wallace, Idaho) added nine and Kightlinger set down a career high seven.
Monique Tobbagi led Oregon with 10 kills.
The Cougars flirted with perfection while handcuffing the Ducks to a
"bagel" in the second game, hitting .727 with eight kills and no errors in
11 chances. For the match, the Cougars hit a season-high .410 (53 kills,
12 errors, 100 chances), while holding Oregon to just .118 (31 kills, 19
errors, 102 chances). WSU approached its all-time hitting record of .475,
set against Montana in 1992, before leveling off in the third game.
"It's always tough after you win a game 15-0 to come back with the same
intensity the next game," said WSU Coach Cindy Fredrick, whose team reeled
off eight straight points to close out game three. "Game three was close
at the beginning, but I'm proud of the way our team finished."
As a team, WSU out-blocked Oregon 10.5-2. Holly Harris (Sandy, Utah),
LaToya Harris, Kightlinger, Sperry and Wright all had three total blocks.
Kerry Lewis (West Linn, Ore.) had a career-best two service aces as the
Cougars posted eight aces on the night.
WSU hosts Oregon State Saturday, Oct. 23, in a 7 p.m. match at Beasley
