PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team swept the Idaho
Vandals 15-10, 15-7, 15-9, in the Battle of the Palouse Tuesday night
before 897 fans at Beasley Coliseum. The non-conference win stopped the
five-match Cougar loss streak that began with at Oregon State Sept. 24.
WSU moves to 8-8 overall and Idaho is now 13-6 overall.
Four Cougars hit in double figures and the team hit .282 while holding the
Vandals to .082. WSU was led by the 13 kills of LaToya Harris. Idaho was
led by the 10 kills of Anna Reznicek.
The visiting Vandals got on the scoreboard with the first three points but
the Cougars awoke in time to take the lead at back at four. Not
dominating, the Cougars needed nine attempts to score the game point and
gave up four points before winning game one 15- 10.
Kristen Johnson tagged five of her eight blocks and Idaho's -.057 hitting
percentage gave WSU the second game, 15-7.
Idaho hustled to within one point of the Cougs at 10-9, but kills by
Johnson and Kortney Jamtaas put WSU back on the trail to victory, claiming
game three 15-9, and the match 3-0.
"That's what we working for right now and these kids are trying to learn
how to close it out," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said. "And it made them
really nervous when they couldn't close it out in the first two games.
They pulled it together and said let's get this done."
WSU takes on cross-state and Pac-10 rival Washington Saturday, Oct. 16, at
7 p.m. at Beasley Coliseum.
