Under legendary coach Buck Bailey, the Cougars roared to a 14-2 start of the 1950 season and cruised to a 27-4 mark in the regular season, including a 12-2 record and ?rst-place ?nish in the Paci?c Coast Conference Northern Division. Washington State College swept a pair of games in Pullman against Stanford to capture the PCC crown and traveled to Omaha, Neb., for the ?rst College World Series at the site, and the first CWS appearance by the Cougars. After defeating Tufts in the opener, future Major League pitcher Gene Conley and Rod Keough pitched back-to-back complete game victories over Alabama and Rutgers, respectively. WSC was defeated by Texas and the Longhorns defeated Rutgers to set up a winner-take-all game with the Cougars. Despite three hits by shortstop Eddie Coleman, the Cougars were beaten 3-0 and ?nished national runner-up with a 32-6 record.
