Michael Plank enters his first season on Kyle Smith’s staff as the Washington State men’s basketball recruiting coordinator in 2019-20.
Plank comes to WSU from City College of San Francisco (CCSF) where he was was amd assistant coach to Justin Labagh. In 2018-19 the Rams went an impressive 31-2 overall, falling just short of claiming the California state title after taking home the Cost Conference championship in the regular season. Under his guidance the Rams produced the conference MVP in Malcolm Johnson who averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds. In addition the Rams saw three other players named to the All-Coast Conference First Team with another member earning second team honors.
Prior to his work at CCSF, Plank was part of the Milwaukee Bucks Training Camp and Mini Camp Support Staff that assisted head coach Jason Kidd with all team practices and workouts. Additionally, Plank assisted in the organization’s evaluation, scouting, and preparation of Bucks' players for heading into the NBA season. In 2018, Plank assisted head coach Jeff Van Gundy at the FIBA USA Men's National Team camp in Santa Cruz, Calif.
On the AAU circuit, Plank was the head coach of the 17U Nike EYBL AAU Portland Basketball Club. While in charge, Plank coached and recruited top-tier prep talent in the Northwest and throughout the West Coast including three ESPN Top 100 talents. As a coach, Plank coordinated and implemented player development program for all of his players while showcasing his players' talents for college recruiting.
From 2014-16, Plank was worked on the bench as an assistant coach at Portland State where he took the lead on the Vikings recruitment. Plank went to PSU after spending one season as an assistant coach at Casper College in Wyoming. He also worked one year as a graduate assistant at University of San Francisco (2012-13), and three years as lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Willamette (2008-12).
Plank was the head coach of the Portland Hoops Kings (South) AAU team from 2006-2008. His teams compiled a 37-8 record.
In addition to his collegiate and AAU coach, Plank was an assistant coach for the Costa Rican National Team at the Central American Games during the summer of 2015. He joined former college teammate, Josh Erickson, who is the head coach of team Costa Rica.
A 2006 graduate of Willamette with a degree in Sociology, Plank played four years of basketball and football for the Bearcats. He also played one season of baseball. In 2016, Plank earned his masters in educational leadership from Concordia University.
Plank and his wife, Cristina, have one daughter, Myla Christi, who was born in April of 2019.
