What do you need to know and do, before you arrive on campus?
1. Be Admitted to WSU
You need to be admitted to the university for fall semester. You cannot participate in summer school programming if you have not been admitted to WSU. (If you need help with this step, please contact your coach.)
2. Create a Network ID and Password
When you apply for admission, you receive (via e-mail) a WSU identification number. Use that number to create a WSU network identification and password. You must have a network ID and password to access all of WSU's systems. Write this information down and bring it to campus with you. You will need it the entire time you are a student at WSU.
3. Pay the Fall Residence Hall Deposit
You must complete a housing application, sign a fall residence hall housing contract, and pay the $150.00 housing deposit. WSU Athletics cannot pay the housing deposit for you. Some things to know about the fall housing application:
- Your coach should tell you the dormitory to request. You will get your first choice, so the second and third choices are of little consequence. WSU Athletics pays for double occupancy rooms. If you would like to pay the cost difference between a single room and a double room, make sure your coach knows you want a single room.
- You will be asked a number of preference questions (Do you sleep in the cold?, Do you stay up late or get up early?, etc.). For most students, these questions help Housing find compatible roommates. With student-athletes, coaches provide the residence hall staff with a roommate list so that you are matched with another student-athlete, usually from your sport.
- You will be asked to indicate a Residence Dining Account (RDA) level. Indicate Level 2. As a student-athlete, you will most likely be placed in the Cougar Fitness Café dining plan.
- Click on the box indicating that you are a student-athlete. You can pay the housing deposit with a Master Card, Discover, or American Express. You CANNOT pay with a Visa. There is also an electronic check option.
- If you are not yet 18 years old, you will have to create a friend ID for your parent - it is always the email address for your parent. Your parent will receive an auto-reply email as soon as you finsh your portion of the application. You will need to close the web page with your application on it before your parent can log on just as you did. Your parent should read and approve all five sections of the contract and then make the security deposit payment which is the last step of the application process.
4. Provide Proof of Immunization
WSU requires that all incoming students meet immunization requirements prior to class registration. WSU Health and Wellness Services (HWS) oversees the measles hold. To get the measles hold lifted, you must either provide HWS with documentation of immunity or receive a vaccine. View the Health & Wellness Services New Student Checklist for more information. You can fax your documentation directly to HWS at 509-335-6223 or to Athletics Student-Athlete Development at 509-335-0208.
5. Register for Summer Advantage
You need to apply to the Summer Advantage program. The following will help with completing the registration form:
- You will sign up for Alive! Session 4
- Room preferences are based on first-come, first-served basis. You cannot request roommates or trade rooms.
- Choose Music 262 as your Course 2
The $495 program fee will be charged to your student account and then paid by athletics.
6. Take the Online Writing Placement Exam.
You must have your writing skills assessed to determine the best course(s) that you need to successfully enter the writing-rich curriculum at WSU. After you register for Summer Advantage, you will receive an email from ProctorU asking for you to schedule a time to take your online exam. You will need the following for the exam:
- A computer with high-speed internet access
- A web cam
- A photo ID
- Two uninterrupted hours of your time.
Once you complete your exam, your test will be sent to the WSU Writing Assessment Office where it will be evaluated during the next scheduled rating session. Your results will be entered into the WSU system and those results will dictate which English course you will be register for during Summer Advantage. Your WSU student account will be billed $13.37 and then athletics will cover the fee.
7. Take the Online Math Placement Exam.
Please take the math placement exam before you arrive in June. Information is available on the WSU Math Placement Exam website. The cost is $45 which will be charged to your student account and WSU Athletics will pay the charge. The test is "interactive", so as soon as it believes you have mastery at a level it will increase the difficulty of the questions. It will take you two hours to complete. When you finish the exam, it will tell you your math placement score, in addition to math deficiencies and will give you practice problems. If you so choose, you can retake the exam after a 24-hour period.
8. Register for Summer Alive!
Register for Session 4 of Alive! which takes place the week prior to the start of Summer Advantage classes. Complete and submit your online registration through the Alive! website. The cost for the Alive! program is $222 and WSU Athletics will pay this fee. On the registration form, please indicate that you will be "deferring the matriculation fee."
If Session 4 is full, please download the registration form, fill it out, and fax it to Wanda at 509-335-0208, or e-mail it to wtennant@wsu.edu. We have a few extra spaces in each Alive! session so we should be able to get you in.
Fall Class Schedule — Most incoming WSU students receive their fall schedules at Alive! As a student-athlete you are given priority registration, so you should have your fall schedule before you attend your Alive! session. Once you are admitted, your housing deposit is paid and you have submitted your immunization confirmation forms, you will be contacted by your athletics academic advisor to discuss your fall schedule options.
9. Dining During Summer Advantage
WSU Athletics will provide you $150 per week to purchase food while you are in summer school. On-campus dining facilities accept Cougar Cash. You can make a Cougar Cash transfer from your existing bank account or you can open a U.S. Bank Free Student Checking Account and have your stipend deposited directly into that account. The U.S. Bank debit card works as a Cougar Cash Card. WSU Athletics will directly deposit your stipend into whichever bank account you designate. In order to make this happen, you must log into your zzusis portal and tell the university into which bank account you would like to have your stipend deposited. (For international student-athletes, you must have a United States bank account to set up direct deposit.)
To set up direct deposit:
- Access the zzusis portal with your network ID and password: zzusis.wsu.edu.
- From the zzusis main page, click on "Check Your Student Aid" in the left-hand box.
- On the Student Aid page, go to the "Authorize Direct Deposit" link on the right-hand side of the page and enter your bank routing numbers and account information.
Parking on Campus
If you bring a car to campus for summer session, please purchase a parking permit. The permit will cost approximately $45. View WSU Summer Session Parking Rules.
Summer Textbooks
During Advantage Orientation, you will go to the WSU Bookstore (the Bookie) to pick up your summer textbooks. You will be provided a "book voucher" that includes all the required textbooks for your summer classes. At the conclusion of your summer courses, you must return these textbooks to the Compliance Office in Bohler 285.
