Janey Charlton enters her third year as an assistant coach with the rowing program and her first year as WSU's novice coach. During her first two seasons at WSU, Charlton has assisted in guiding the Cougars to two consecutive NCAA Championship appearances.
In the 2003-04 season, Charlton helped guide the Cougars to their second team appearance at the NCAA Championships where she led the varsity four squad to a 11th place finish. In addition, Charlton also coached the varsity four crew to a fourth place finish at the Pac-10 Championships.
In 2002-03, Charlton led the varsity four crew to a top 10 finish at the NCAAs as well as a third place finish at the conference championships.
Charlton came to the Palouse after coaching in Canada and New Zealand from 1997 to 2002. Prior to coming to WSU, Charlton served as head coach of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand (2001-2002). Her squads won 12 gold, six silver, and five bronze medals in the 2002 New Zealand University Rowing Championships. She also coached the women's four, which competed at the 2002 World University Rowing Championships in Nottingham United Kingdom.
Before arriving in New Zealand, Charlton served as the assistant coach and Summer Club head coach (2001) at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. She also served as head coach at the 2001 Canada Games where she led her squad to second place finishes in overall men's, women's and teams points competition.
Prior to that, she served two years (1999-2001) as Rowing BC's Provincial Coach, where she coordinated the team, including selecting the athletes, hiring the coaches and organizing trip details. During her tenure with Rowing BC, Charlton also served as the junior women's coach and corporate challenge coach at the Gorge Rowing Centre in Victoria. In addition, Charlton was the Canadian Junior National Team Coach, taking her squad to the Junior World Championships and leading the women's eight plus boat to a fifth place finish.
Charlton began her coaching career in the spring of 1997 at St. Peters School in New Zealand before moving to Canada in the fall and coaching the girls at St. Andrews High School in British Columbia. That fall she also began coaching at the Victoria City Rowing Club where she served as head women's junior coach, head masters coach and club administrator (1997-2000).
A 1996 graduate of Otago University, Charlton earned her bachelor's degree in physical education. While competing in New Zealand, Charlton won five New Zealand National Championship Titles, and nine North Island Championship Titles.
