Louisville Wins Cougar Challenge Tournament

September 5, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The University of Louisville dropped the 22nd-ranked and Les Schwab Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tournament hosts, Washington State 15-8, 15-12, 15-3 before 1,128 fans in Beasley Coliseum.

Louisville, Utah and WSU all finished the tournament with identical 2-1 records but the Cardinals won the trophy by a percentage comparing games won versus games lost in head-to-head competition. Utah took second and WSU third. Gonzaga, ended the tournament with a 1-2 record (1-3 overall) but managed to give Utah a tough match Saturday night before losing 15-7, 15-13, 13-15, 16-14. Both teams had four players in double-figure kills. Gonzaga's Diane Pascua led all players with 19 kills while Utah's McKell Stilson tagged 18 in addition to her nine blocks. The Ute's Stacie Greenwalt had 17 kills and Graciela Torres added 59 assists. Both players were named to the all-tournament squad.

The U of L dominated the Cougars from start to finish, snuffing out any WSU momentum with the power of Sonya Gubaidulina's 20 kills and .667 hitting percentage. Cardinal teammate and fellow Russian Marina Sinichenko contributed 11 kills to the winning effort. Both U of L players were named to the All-Tournament team.

Louisville out-hit WSU .390 to .152 for the match. Sophomore Colleen Smith (Albuquerque, NM) led the Cougs with 10 kills and WSU senior Jennifer Stinson (Davenport, Wash.) only tallied nine kills but had a total of 54 for the two-day tournament. Stinson was named tournament MVP and Wendy Rouse (senior, Reno, Nev.) received the all-tourney nod. Senior setter Samantha Spink (Coeur d'Alene, ID) had 34 assists in the losing effort.

"The connection between Stinson and Spink just wasn't there tonight," WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. "We didn't play together as a team tonight."

In the morning matches, Utah defeated Louisville in four games, 15-13, 4-15, 15-7, 15-13, and Washington State downed Gonzaga, also in four games, 15-12, 9-15, 15-4, 15-9. In the two-hour first match Saturday, Utah had six players in double-figure kills and Louisville had five. Gonzaga captured its first game win over Washington State since the 1992 season. WSU's Stinson and GU's Diane Pascua each had 15 kills.

Coach Fredrick takes her youthful Washington State team on the road next. WSU travels to Provo, Utah, this week to meet #8 BYU and #2 Long Beach State.
