WSU Volleyball Sweeps Oregon For Fourth Pac-10 Win

October 11, 1998

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State won its third consecutive Pacific-10 Conference match Sunday afternoon by defeating Oregon 15-7, 16-14, 15-4 before 976 fans at Beasley Coliseum.

Washington State is now 4-3 in Pac-10, 7-6 overall. Oregon drops to 1-6 in league, 6-12 overall. The Cougars are now tied with UCLA for fourth behind Stanford, USC and Arizona. Washington, with a 0-3 loss to Oregon State Sunday, drops to sixth behind Arizona State.

Cougar senior Jennifer Stinson had 17 kills with only one error in 28 attacks (.571) and contributed a match-high nine blocks with nine digs. Junior Joy Sperry had 14 kills with only two errors in 29 attacks and had a team-high 13 digs with five blocks. Setter Samantha Spink tallied 37 assists and Lucie Vratnickova had 10 digs and three service aces.

Oregon was led by the 16 kills of Alli White. Monique Tobaggi had a match-high 14 digs. The Ducks committed 12 service errors in the three-game match.

Washington State had little trouble in games one and three but had to come from an 8-1 deficit in the middle game. Four consecutive blocks by Stinson gave WSU the lead at 15-14 and a combined block from Vratnickova and Kleven, playing in the front row after WSU used all allotted 12 substitutions, gave the home-team a 16-14 win.

WSU out-blocked the Ducks 17 to seven.

"Joy Sperry was absolutely awesome today," Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick said. "It was so fun to watch her. Everything about her is so upbeat when she is on the court. She gets everybody pumped because she is so fun to play with. She really compliment's Jennifer (Stinson) so well on the outside. Sam Spink's been giving her some nice sets off the net and Joy's got a mean arm swing when she gets up there. Spink played awesome: her digs were unbelievable and hustle was just amazing."

Washington State travels to the California Southland to play #8 USC Friday night, Oct. 16, and UCLA Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18.
