October 08, 2025 | Soccer
MORAGA, Calif. – The Washington State women's soccer team lost 0-1 to Saint Mary's College, Wednesday night at Saint Mary's Stadium. The Gaels jumped out to the early lead with a 7th-minute strike, which proved to be the game-winner, holding on against a relentless WSU attack for 83 minutes.
After allowing the second-fastest goal of the season, the Cougars put five shots on target and tallied eight corner kicks but were unable to break through before the final whistle, suffering their first WCC road loss of the season.
Starting goalkeeper Zora Standifer made two saves, including early in the match to keep the score temporarily level. After the Gaels' goal, the Cougs went on the attack as Isabelle Wright, Jordyn Young, and Alena Watts all had their attempts turned away. Maggie Mace, playing up the field from her normal centerback position, delivered two shots on target including a 43rd-minute header that forced a diving save.
The Cougars trailed at halftime for just the second time this season, returning from the break with a similar offensive firepower. Seven of WSU's eight corner kicks came in the second half with Audrey Shackelford serving in dangerous crosses from the corner flag. Wazzu forced SMC's 'keeper into five saves
Washington State returns to Pullman to host Loyola Marymount Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field.
