Volleyball Adds Six for 2024

PULLMAN, Wash. (May 29, 2024) – Washington State volleyball Head Coach Korey Schroeder has announced the signing of six new Cougars ahead of the upcoming 2024 season.

These additions put the 2024 signing class at eight as they join Sage Brustad and Jaden Walz who signed in January. Of the six new signees, three are transfers and three are freshman, hailing from Washington, Idaho, California, Illinois, Hawaii and Mexico.

Italia Bernal – Fr., Setter, Mexicali, Mexico, Coast Volleyball
Bernal is a setter who comes to WSU from Mexicali, Mexico where she played with club team Coast Volleyball. There, she helped the team win the Triple Crown Tournament, 18 Elite title. She was also starting setter for Mexico's national team in the U19 World Championships in Croatia as she helped take down Germany and Canada.

Keniya Cleveland – Jr., Middle Blocker, Lakewood, Calif., Feather River College
Cleveland joins the Cougs after transferring from Feather River College in California. The incoming junior totaled 63 total blocks in 2023, including 35 solo blocks and 28 assisted, helping the team to finish runner-up in the State Tournament. She also added 109 kills, 158 points, and averaged 1.7 kills and 2.4 points per set.

Haumea Marumoto – Fr., Outside Hitter, Honolulu, Hawaii, Punahou HS
Marumoto comes to Pullman from Honolulu, Hawaii where she has been named All-State in volleyball all four years at Punahou High School. In her senior season, she helped her team to the state championship game in a year that saw her total 373 kills and average a .210 hit percentage over 101 sets played.

Breccan Scheck – Fr., Middle Blocker, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Glenbard West HS
Scheck comes to Pullman from Glenbard West High School in Illinois where she was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball. As a senior and team captain, she helped lead her team to a regional title before falling in the Sectional Championship game in a season where her team went 35-4 overall. She also played with Adversity Volleyball Club, helping them take second place in the American Division at the USAV Girl's 18's National Championships.

Taryn Vrieling – Jr., Outside Hitter, Kennewick, Wash., University of Idaho
Vrieling comes to Washington State as a junior transfer from just down the road at Idaho. During her sophomore year at Idaho in 2023, she led the team in kills (219), points (240.5), kills per set (2.77) and points per set (3.04) while appearing in 25 matches. She also finished second on the team with 16 service aces and 138 digs, and tallied 11 blocks on the year. Before playing at Idaho, she was a Mid-Columbia All-Conference First Team selection at Kamiakin High School, and an IBEW Student-Athlete of the Month in her senior year.

Jade Warren – Gr., Middle Blocker, Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, College of Idaho
Warren comes to the Palouse as a graduate transfer from the College of Idaho where she earned NAIA All-American honors along with being named First Team All-Region and First Team All-CCC in 2023. In that 2023 season she finished the year with 124 total blocks, 25 solo blocks and 99 assisted, along with 256 kills. She also earned All-Conference Honorable Mention as a sophomore in 2021. Prior to her collegiate career, she played both volleyball and basketball at Horseshoe Bend High School in Idaho, and in her senior year was Conference Player of the Year in volleyball, and runner-up Player of the Year in basketball.

Washington State, coming off its eighth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2023, will continue to prepare to compete as an affiliate member in the West Coast Conference in 2024.
