Cougars open NCAA Indoor Championships Friday in Boston

PULLMAN, Wash. — Two Coguars will make the cross-country journey to Boston, Mass., this week to compete in the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships from The TRACK at New Balance.  Eva Lowder will compete Friday in the women's pole vault final, while Mason Mahacek gets set to compete Friday and Saturday in the two-day heptathlon final.

Season Highlights - Eva Lowder
- Burst onto the scene with a lifetime-best 4.22m/ 13' 10" vault to win the Spokane Sports Showcase at The Podium in her collegiate debut.
- Went on to capture five top-two finishes with three wins in the women's pole vault in her first indoor season as a Cougar.
- Capped her freshman indoor season with a program-record mark of 4.38m/ 14' 4.5" to finish second at the Ken Shannon Last Chance.
- Lowder's 4.38m vault broke Tamara Diles' 22-year-old women's program record previously set back in 2002.

Season Highlights - Mason Mahacek
- Had indoor PR's in all seven heptathlon events during his lone winter wearing Crimson & Gray after transferring from Michigan last summer.
- Finished with lifetime bests in four events during his birthday weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, placing second overall with a school record 5,762 points.
- Reached an indoor PR of 2.04m to finish first in the heptathlon high jump at the Ken Shannon Last Chance.

Cougars at the Indoor Championships
- Mahacek is the first men's multi athlete from Washington State to make an appearance at indoor nationals in the heptathlon, and the first multi athlete since Julie ('06-'07) and Diana Pickler ('05-'06) each went to back-to-back indoor championships between 2005 and 2007. 
- Freshman Eva Lowder is the Cougars' first pole vaulter to reach indoor nationals since Tyson Byers in 2007, and the first women's pole vaulter from WSU to qualify since Diles in 2002.

2024 Championships Schedule
Lowder will compete in the women's pole vault competition slated for night one on Fri., Mar. 8, will begin at 3 p.m. PST, while Mahacek and the men's heptathlon field will compete both Friday and Saturday, Mar. 8 and Mar. 9, at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston, Mass. All events can be streamed live on ESPN+ with live results available at FlashResults.NCAA.com.
