Outdoor season officially underway following Saturday meets

TUCSON, Ariz. / SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams began the 2024 schedule Saturday as they competed at the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta from Drachman Stadium and the Sam Adams Classic on the campus of Whitworth University.

Arizona Spring Break Fiesta Recap
Sophomore from Ogden, Utah, Laura Lindquist got the Cougars off to a strong start with a third-place finish in the women's javelin throw after she launched a PR by over seven feet on her second attempt in flight two.  Lindquist's 49.90m/ 163' 8" throw was the ninth-best mark in Washington State history (new javelin implement introduced in 1999) and also would have ranked 43rd in the nation and seventh in the Pac-12 last season.

Ben Chappell placed second in his return to action, finishing with a best mark of 60.12m/ 197' 3" in the men's hammer throw, and Ronald Grueso Mosquera finished second in the men's shot with a mark of 18.25m/ 59' 10.5" that held up from his third attempt of the competition.  Triple jumper Eli Lawrence captured his first outdoor win in his college career with a 14.59m to make it into finals, followed by a 14.80m jump on his final try of the day.

Maribel Caicedo (13.09) and Micaela De Mello (13.40) finished first and second, respectively, in the women's 100m hurdles, and later went on to each run a leg on the women's 4x100m relay team that finished fourth on the day with a time of 44.94, the eighth-fastest all-time at WSU.  Washington State's women's steeplechase record holder Caroline Jerotich won her first 3,000m steeplechase of the season with a 10:28.44 to lead a small field of three on Saturday.

The Cougar trio of Alaina Stone Boggs (4:29.08, first-place), Zenah Cheptoo (4:29.45, second-place), and Cristina Molteni (4:32.47, third-place) swept the podium in the women's 1,500m run, while Brian Barsaiya (3:48.91) finished runner-up in the men's race.

True freshman Grant Buckmiller clocked a 46.14 in the men's 400m dash, the sixth-fastest in program history, while Jared McAlvey later took third in the 400m hurdles with a 51.31 to open the season.

Sam Adams Classic Recap
Washington State captured four event wins on the day at the Sam Adams Classic in Spokane Saturday with Ashley Hollenbeck winning the 100m dash in 12.27 to highlight the day on the track for WSU.  Multi athlete Sarah Kovich finished runner-up in the women's 100m hurdles in 15.44, and later won the women's high jump after clearing 1.69m on her second try.

Across the track in the horizontal jump pits, Justin Sands won the triple jump with a mark of 13.95m.  Caden Hottman captured a throws win for the Cougs after launching a 47.13m toss on his third attempt during finals.
