AUSTIN — 11th-ranked Washington State volleyball (10-1) picked up its third consecutive top-25 win and its second straight over the AVCA Top-10 after a come-from-behind, 3-1, win Friday night on the road at sixth-ranked Texas (5-3). WSU hit .226 as a team. while holding the Longhorns to just .166 hitting and tallying a season high 16 total blocks as a team in front of a hostile crowd in the Gregory Gymnasium.
Iman Isanovic led Washington State with 13 kills while Magda Jehlářová added 12 kills and nine blocks on the night. The Cougars trailed by a set and were down 11-4 in the second set, before outscoring Texas 9-2 down the stretch to even the match at one set apiece. Washington State improved to 3-1 on the season after dropping the opening set, having come from behind last Friday against eighth-ranked BYU, and again on Wednesday at 18th-ranked Baylor.
"We've been together with this group for such a long time and we've been on them about playing well in a hostile environment on the road, and against a quality team," said Associate Head Coach
Burdette Greeny. "That is why we built the schedule the way that we did this season. For them to go out and do it, I'm just so proud of them. We could have rolled over and died after losing the first set and going down 11-4 in the second."
Argentina Ung was all over the court as usual, adding seven digs and 43 assists with five kills and only one attack error on the night.
"We've been waiting for Arge to get really aggressive at the net and not just get balls over at the net but actually attack them," said Greeny.
The Cougars had their best blocking night on the season thus far as Jehlářová's team high was backed up by a career-high eight total blocks for
Argentina Ung, and season-highs for
Argentina Ung and
Lana Radakovic who each finished with six block assists.
"There were definitely some big momentum swings going on. Texas is loaded with athletes and I just love the grit and resiliency from us coming out tonight," said Greeny. "We saw coming into the match that Texas was one of the best blocking teams in the nation at 3.24 blocks/set, but they were also being blocked at 2.68 blocks/set and so we thought there might be something there. This was a coming out party for our block and if we can get our block going, our digging improves and watch out for us."
