Box Score PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 17 Washington State women's soccer team (5-0-0) continued a perfect start to the season with a 2-1 win over visiting San Diego State (2-2-1) Thursday night at Lower Soccer Field. WSU senior
Bridget Rieken and freshman
Megan Santa Cruz both scored within the first five minutes to secure control of the game and ultimately defeat the Aztecs.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead less than three minutes in, after a shot from senior
Margie Detrizio was parried wide for a corner kick. The ensuing service from freshman
Reagan Kotschau found Rieken, who headed the ball back across goal and into the far post. The goal in the third minute was Rieken's second of the year and Kotschau's first career assist.
Just two minutes later, Washington State pressed forward, playing quick-touch passes up the left side from freshman
Georgia Whitehead through Detrizio and towards a sprinting Santa Cruz. The Burbank, Calif., freshman took a touch to control the ball before cutting in to the penalty spot and finishing her first career goal off the underside of the crossbar. Whitehead was credited with her first career assist, while Detrizio picked up her third assist of the season, and WSU led 2-0 just 4 minutes and 45 seconds into the match.
The early goals mark the two fastest goals in a single Cougar game since Wazzu scored twice in the opening six minutes against Hawaii in September 2021.
WSU entered halftime with a 2-0 and continued to create chances throughout the match. The Cougars finished with 27 shots compared to five from the Aztecs. WSU put 10 shots on target, led by Detrizio with three. San Diego State's goal came in the 71st minute when a high-powered shot was saved by
Nadia Cooper, but the loose ball rebound found the foot of SDSU's Denise Castro for the goal.
Santa Cruz's fifth-minute goal would prove to be the game-winner, as WSU continued to threaten in front of goal after conceding. Cooper finished with three saves and picked up her 23rd career victory. The Cougars start the season 5-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and the third time under Head Coach
Todd Shulenberger's tenure.
The Cougars will take a brief respite with no match this weekend, before returning to action Thursday, Sept. 7 against Sant Mary's. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage on Pac-12 Network.
