PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 15 Washington State women's soccer team (5-1-0) trailed for over 87 minutes, Thursday night after conceding an early goal against Saint Mary's (4-2-1), ultimately falling to the Gaels, 1-0, at Lower Soccer Field. The Cougars' dropped their first contest of the season after SMC's Briana Salvetti picked the pocket of WSU's goalkeeper and finished into the open net.
Saint Mary's Salvetti scored the match's lone goal two minutes and 57 seconds into the contest when WSU played back to goalkeeper Nadia Cooper. An errant touch allowed the Gaels to pounce on the opportunity and take the early lead.
WSU spent the remainder of the game chasing the equalizer, putting five of its 13 shots on target. The Cougars had 10 set piece opportunities from the corner flag, with two of the better looks coming off the head of junior Lindsey Turner. The match will feature a "Fill the Hill" giveaway of throw blankets, and recognition of first responders, law enforcement, and military serve members.
