CORVALLIS, Ore. (March 10, 2023) – Washington State dropped its Pac-12 Conference opener at No. 15 Oregon State 5-1 at Goss Stadium Friday evening.
Â
Washington State (11-2, 0-1 Pac-12) received a two-hit game from
Sam Brown but the Cougars left 10 men on base and saw their seven-game winning streak snapped. Oregon State scored twice in the second, twice more in the third and once in the fifth to improve to 11-2.
Â
Brown reached base all four plate appearances, a single, a double, a walk and hit-by-pitch while
Jacob McKeon singled and scored and
Jonah Advincula doubled to push his hitting streak to 12 games. Cougar starter
Dakota Hawkins struck out six in four innings but allowed four earned runs while reliever
Connor Wilford fired four no-hit innings and collected six strikeouts.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second inning, OSU took advantage of a couple Cougar miscues in the frame as two wild pitches followed two Beaver hits and Oregon State took a 2-0 lead. The Beavers loaded the bases with nobody out in the third inning but
Cam Magee made nice play at third base on a hard hit ball, stepping on third for the force out and fired home to cut down the runner at the plate for the second out. One batter later, OSU delivered a two-out two-run double down the left field to push the lead to 4-0.
Â
The Cougars pushed a run across in the fourth inning as McKeon singled through the right side and Brown followed with an opposite-field double into the left-centerfield gap to put runners on second and third. One batter later, Magee brought McKeon home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Â
In the fifth,
Greg Fuchs led off the inning with a double to right-centerfield but OSU starter Trent Sellers kept WSU off the board with a flyout, strikeout and groundout. The Beavers added an unearned run in their half after a Cougar fielding error on a potential double play ball allowed OSU to push the lead to 5-1.
Â
WSU threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with a hit-by-pitch and pair of walks but again Sellers turned the threat way with a strikeout. The Cougars threatened again the seventh after Advincula doubled but were kept off the board.
Â
In the eighth, Brown muscled a single into left field and Magee line a single into right field but again the Beaver bullpen buckled down with a strikeout and a groundout.
Â
In the ninth,
Brandham Ponce delivered a pinch-hit single to left field but the OSU bullpen closed things out to clinch the conference opener.
