SPOKANE, Wash. -- The multi athletes got things started Thursday in the Podium as Washington State men's and women's indoor track and field opened the
WSU Open & Multi with the pentathlon and the opening four events of the heptathlon.
Sarah Kovich hit three personal-bests and finished 21
st in the women's pentathlon while
Lee Walburn finished the day at eighth in the men's heptathlon.
Walburn clocked a 7.23 to place second in the 60m dash to start the day and later followed up with fifth-place finishes in both the shot (12.82m) and high jump (1.89m). The transfer from Caroll College (Mont.) will look to carry the momentum of his season-best marks in all four events on day one into day two as he sits in eighth with
2722 points after Thursday.
Kovich, a sophomore from Bothell, Wash., had a fantastic showing in the pentathlon to kick off the WSU Open for the Cougar women. She posted a personal-best in the 60m hurdles (9.30s), high jump (1.60m), and shot put (9.03m) to place 21
st overall with 3145 points. Renick Meyer bowed out of the pentathlon after her ninth-place finish in the 60m hurdles (9.10).
NEXT UP:
The Cougars will open day two in Spokane with the conclusion of the the heptathlon. The heptathlon 60m hurdles will lead things off beginning at 11 a.m. The women's high jump, the first scheduled field event for the weekend, is set for Friday at 2 p.m. while the women's 800m will kick off the running events at 3p.m.
