Cougs fall to top-seeded Pitt, run ends in sweet 16
December 07, 2023 | Volleyball
Washington State finishes the season with 26 wins, the most for any team under Head Coach Jen Greeny.
PITTSBURGH — Pia Timmer had a pair of aces to become the Washington State volleyball (26-8) career leader (152), but the Cougars fell Thursday, 3-0, on the road at top-seeded Pitt (28-4) at the Fitzgerald Field House. Washington State finished with its lowest team hitting percentage of the postseason (.141), but will still finish 2023 with a WSU program record .289 (1,657-528-3909) team hitting percentage.
Iman Isanovic had a team-high eight kills, and Magda Jehlárová had seven kills and a pair of blocks, finishing her fifth season as the Cougars' all-time leader in career hitting percentage (.385). Lana Radakovic, fifth-year transfer from UC Davis, finished her collegiate career with three kills and zero errors (3-0-6, .500), while Argentina Ung finished with 25 assists on the night.
Ung finishes 2023 10th all-time at WSU in career assists (2,488) as she helped lead the Cougars' offense to its program record .289 hitting percentage.
Karly Basham finished with five digs and an ace on the night, capping her Cougar career with 1,419 digs and 112 aces at the service line. Her partner on the back row, Julia Norville, finishes her career fourth all-time at WSU with 138 aces, and was one of only 14 players in program history to notch 1,000 career digs.
The Cougs hit .273 as a team in Thursday's Sweet 16, but were unable to break .100 in the following two sets. Pittsburgh finished the night with an 8-4 edge in aces and a 12-4 advantage in blocks.
As it looks to the next offseason and recruiting cycle, Washington State's veteran squad will say goodbye to its eight departing seniors and fifth year players — Karly Basham, Iman Isanovic, Peyton Claus, Pia Timmer, Julia Norville, Magda Jehlárová, Weronika Wojdyla, and Lana Radakovic.
